FISHING
THE EKALUK RIVER IS A COMPLETE FLY FISHING EXPERIENCE.
Virgin water in a pristine wilderness area. Space and solitude. A river teeming
with very large and very aggressive fish.
The
Searun Arctic Char, the King of all Northern Game Fish,
readily rises to a variety of flys; streamers/wet flys,
dry flys and/or nymphs. The Arctic Char fights with
great determination, speed and raw/brute strength
that challenges the angler and his tackle to the utmost.
Several
of our Scandinavian guests, seasoned atlantic salmon
anglers all, have made the following observation; “if
these fish (the Ekaluk river char) could grow to the
same size as an Atlantic Salmon, you would probably never
land one!”

“ I
HAVE FISHED ALL OVER THE WORLD
AND WOULD RATE FISHING
THE EKALUK RIVER
THE WORLD'S PREMIER FISHING EXPERIENCE."
Quoted from our repeat
guest and globe-trotting angler,
Peter Harrison, Port Townsend WA. |

Tackle/equipment
normally used is that similar to what is used for Atlantic
Salmon and/or Steelhead fishing - long and relatively
stiff rods , single hand or Spey, quality reels with
lots of backing. Floating and/or sink-tip lines in class
8 or 9 with 12 and 15 lb tippets are the norm. (No full
sinking lines or shooting heads required). Popular Ekaluk
flys can be purchased in camp.
Fishing
is by “walk & wade” under direction of
professional fly fishing guides. The river is divided
into twelve different beats, all within easy walking
distance from camp. Easy walking, safe and comfortable
wading. Pool rotation on a daily (or twice daily) basis. |

THE SEASON
ON THE EKALUK RIVER IS VERY SHORT AND VERY INTENSE.
The fish start to trickle in from the ocean by mid-August
each year. The run then reaches its peak around the 20th/22nd
of August and thereafter remains “heavy & steady” for
the next three weeks or so. During a short few weeks, well in excess of 80.000
silver bright fish
(DFO Statistics) in absolute prime
condition enter the Ekaluk river.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO CATCH?
More and bigger fish than you ever thought possible! Two, three or even four
good sized fish per hour (yes, per hour) is “the norm”.
The average fish measures between twenty-seven to thirty inches in length and
weighs in at around eight to ten/eleven pounds.
A great number of fish are between thirty and thirty-three inches in length.
Be prepared to battle such twelve to fourteen pound fish on a regular basis.
Huge fish in excess of thirty-four/five inches in length, weighing sixteen/seventeen
pounds or better are by no means uncommon....
To catch a NEW WORLD RECORD Arctic Char on the Ekaluk river is certainly within
reach for the dedicated angler!
